The City of Lakes Nordic Ski Foundation is holding three adventure day camps this summer for kids ages 9-13: one in June, one in July and one in August. Kids learn about an active lifestyle in a fun camp setting. Specifically, kids will experience the year-round athletic lifestyle of a cross country skier through a variety of outdoor activities and will learn the basics of training for aerobic sports, and cross country skiing in particular.
Five to seven kids are paired with an experienced counselor and the kids rotate through different stations each day. The kids will experience roller-skiing, mountain biking, hill bounding or pole hiking, orienteering or adventure racing, swimming, Ultimate Frisbee and other games, they will learn to wax skis – and generally have a great time learning some of the basic skills of a cross country skier.
The camps are based at the Wirth Beach Picnic Pavilion, but the activities will take place throughout Theodore Wirth Park.
Location: Theodore Wirth Park - Wirth Beach Picnic Pavilion on Glenwood Avenue (between Xerxes and Wirth Parkway).
Cost: $170 (Need-based scholarships are available. Contact Margaret Adelsman at 612 604-5332 or margaret@cityoflakesloppet.com for more information.)
Schedule:
- Session II: July 12-16
- Session III: August 9-13
Daily schedule: 9 AM to 4 PM
Note that the kids only need a decent pair of shoes. Mountain bikes, roller-skis, etc. are provided by the Nordic Ski Foundation.
Session III in August will have a little different emphasis – with both sports and some gardening and naturalist activities.
